Trying eternal.september. Does this work?
"I see nothing" (Hogan's...)

The only issue I have with ET is it doesn't always connect to
Thunderbird and once in a while this connection means I can't read a
message for a while. Seems to sort itself out after a bit though!

I'd been using Supernews for decades but they have become erratic,
sometimes dropping my insightful and amusing posts. We can't allow
that!

I use the Agent newsreader, which works pretty well.

My provider Frugal Usenet seems to be having a similar issue with
dropped posts. Test, test

I am using ***@individual.de. No drop-outs or anything but no binaries.

Ok, not free but only 10 Euros a year and they let me pay for several
years at a time to reduce the hassle.

Binaries! You mean people watch movies and TV shows when they could be
designing electronics?

Pretty messed up if you ask me.

No, no, maybe you are too young for this :-)

In the days of the Neanderthals we used to share schematics,
oscilloscope plots, prototype photographs and stuff on the newsgroup
a.b.s.e. which supports binaries. Think of it as attached files.

Ok, yes, maybe there has been the occasional Dilbert cartoon as well ...

Right, my impression was these days it's possible to use Usenet to
exchange relatively large files, like DVD rips and such. I'm assuming
mostly of pirated and/or scandalous material.

Beats me though I'm not much of a movie-person.

Eternal September works for me, most of the time. I do share John
Robertson's experience of having to wait for it display a post or post
one of my messages.

I mostly use news.solani.org, you need to register.
It is faster than eternal september, I use that sometimes too.
I think eternal september slows things down if you do a lot of downloading...

I use my own newsreader 'NewsFleX' since 1998 ? or so, when I got a CD with Linux (SLS Linux)
https://www.linux-distros.com/sls-linux/
and needed a replacement for free agent, so wrote NewsFleX:
https://panteltje.nl/panteltje/newsflex/index.html
re-wrote it some time back so it also runs on Raspberry Pi4 (using that now).

Amazing Usenet still exists!!

Works ok. I have used e-t since I found this group circa 12-13 years ago.
My readers are thunderbird on pcs and NewsTapLite on iPhones. Outages
happen only rarely and seem short duration.

It's always worth checking here:
<https://www.eternal-september.org/serverstatus.php?language=en>

Ray Banana (who runs e-s) is doing a lot of work on the servers since
the message "archive" was lost a couple of months ago. He is slowly
repopulating them, and it means there can be an odd break in service now
and again.

You can always ask for your money back...

About $110. Ray will be most grateful.
